Michigan cannabis sales hold steady in May

Michigan marijuana sales remained relatively flat in May, according to the latest data from the state Cannabis Regulatory Agency.

The state reported $279.6 million in combined medical and adult-use sales for May, one of the higherst monthly figures to date for the Michigan market.

Total sales were up slightly from the $278.5 million recorded in April. The adult-use market accounted for the vast majority of the total, with $278 million, while medical sales contributed $1.6 million.

Flower continued to be the dominant product category, making up $124.3 million of adult-use sales in May, up from $124.1 million in April. Vape cartridges followed at $52 million (up from $51.8 million) and inhalable concentrate at $36.1 million (up from $35.8 million). Infused edibles also had a strong showing with $25.4 million in recreational sales, down slightly from $25.6 million in April.

On the medical side, flower sales totaled $592,671 in May, down from $708,690 in April. Vape cartridges followed at $494,908 (down from $557,104) and infused edibles at $161,830 (down from $178,141).

The Michigan market had 2,227 active adult-use cannabis business licenses at the end of May, up from 2,206 in April. This included:

  • 811 retailers (up from 793)
  • 846 Class C growers (up from 842)
  • 265 processors (down from 266)
  • 305 other license types

Active medical licenses increased from 1,440 in April to 1,764 in May.

Michigan’s adult-use market has now generated more than $8.28 billion in total sales since launching in late 2019. The medical market, which began in 2018, reached $1.61 billion in historical sales.

While May sales were relatively steady versus April, Michigan’s market remains stronger than some other mature state markets. For example, Colorado saw a steep 5% month-over-month drop in April and its worst sales for that month since 2016. Colorado recorded only $120.1 million in total April sales ($105.5 million recreational, $14.6 million medical), down across the board versus previous Aprils.

Although Michigan’s average retail flower price was a competitive $88 per ounce in May, some California dispensaries are now advertising ounces for as low as $60, reflecting the broader trend of falling cannabis prices in mature markets.
