California State Fair to allow cannabis sales, consumption this summer

The California State Fair in Sacramento is poised to become the first such institution to allow marijuana sales and consumption when the fair convenes on July 12.

The new development builds on a cannabis competition launched by State Fair officials in 2022 that has attracted more than 500 entries for this summer, twice as many as last year, The Guardian reported.

The fair itself, which will last 17 days, will feature booths from licensed cannabis businesses, which will be allowed to engage in direct-to-consumer sales while the fair is underway, and will also have a 30,000-square-foot consumption lounge where visitors over the age of 21 can partake.

The new plan aims to “provide a platform to amplify California’s rich agricultural bounty and facilitate storytelling for farmers from diverse backgrounds and experiences,” the fair’s CEO, Tom Martinez, told The Guardian.

The move garnered quick applause from those in the legal cannabis industry.

“Hosting cannabis sales and consumption is a groundbreaking milestone in destigmatization by facilitating a deeper connection between consumers and the farmers who cultivate their products with such care,” Lauren Carpenter, the co-founder of 15-store retail chain Embarc, told The Guardian.

Embarc is one of many businesses that plan to have a booth at the fair, according to The Guardian.

In addition, the State Fair’s cannabis competition has also been expanded to include categories for pre-rolls, concentrates, cartridges, edibles, beverages and wellness products, The Guardian reported.

A handful of other states have also allowed cannabis events, though many have been temporary, such as the Cannabis Growers Showcases in New York state last year, a stopgap program designed to help farmers unload cannabis goods before they went bad. Although the legislature approved a bill this year to allow regulators to issue permanent business permits for such events, Gov. Kathy Hochul has yet to sign it into law.
